Ethan Vincent

Celebrated for his “compelling stage presence” by the Chicago Tribune and hailed as a “rising star” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Ethan Vincent is rapidly establishing himself as one of the finest and most exciting singers of his generation.

Native American baritone Ethan Vincent opens the 2024-25 season singing the title role in Don Giovanni for Virginia Opera conducted by Adam Turner and directed by Kyle Lang before returning to the company to take on Guglielmo in Così fan tutte with Maestro Turner at the helm. Mr. Vincent will return to the rosters of the Lyric Opera of Chicago to cover the role of Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro under the baton of Erina Yashima with stage director Barbara Gaines and The Metropolitan Opera to cover Schaunard in La bohème in the famous Franco Zeffirelli production with Riccardo Frizza on conducting duty. In the previous season, he made a house and role debut as Leporello in Don Giovanni with San Diego Opera led by Yves Abel and directed by Kyle Lang before being reunited with director Francesca Zambello for a house debut with Washington National Opera singing the Chancellor (aka Ping) in a new production featuring an added world premiere prologue and ending of Puccini’s Turandot conducted by Speranza Scappucci at the Kennedy Center. Mr. Vincent covered the role of Riolobo in Mary Zimmerman’s new production of Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas with music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium at The Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Vincent took part in workshops with the American Lyric Theater as Macbeth in Working for the Macbeths by composer Johanny Navarro and librettist Marcus Yi as well as The Metropolitan Opera where he portrayed Salvador Dalí in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay which based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Michael Chabon with music composed by Mason Bates with libretto by Gene Sheer.

Mr. Vincent launched his 2022-23 season as the baritone soloist in Orff's Carmina Burana for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra opening night concert before joining the San Francisco Opera to cover the role of Germont in La Traviata conducted by Eun Sun Kim with direction by Shawna Lucey. He made several company debuts including the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra singing Méphistophélès in Berlioz's La damnation de Faust led by music director Federico Cortese; Opera Naples returning to the role of Escamillo in Carmen under the baton of Ramón Tebar; and Opera Philadelphia for a series of performances including Carmina Burana and Margaret Bonds’ Credo conducted by Lina Gonzalez-Granados, as well as an Emerging Artist recital for the company. He revisited the opera La bohème to reprise the roles of Schaunard with the Berkshire Opera Festival and Marcello with Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera. Mr. Vincent returned to the Los Angeles Philharmonic to cover the roles of both Ned Peters and Clarence for performances as well as recording Girls of the Golden West conducted by composer John Adams.

In the previous season, Mr. Vincent had a calendar filled with role and house debuts including Riolobo in Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas at Lyric Opera of Chicago conducted by Jordan de Souza; Don Fernando in Fidelio with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel with direction by Alberto Arvelo and Joaquín Solano; Marcello in La bohème with the Columbus Symphony under conductor Rossen Milanov and staged by James Marvel; Schaunard in La bohème with Cincinnati Opera; and Billy Bigelow in Carousel with Indianapolis Opera. In concert, Mr. Vincent appeared with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra performing El Niño by John Adams with the composer on the podium, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in Handel’s Messiah conducted by Ken-David Masur, and two Rachmaninoff engagements at Bard SummerScape led by Leon Botstein: baritone soloist in The Bells and portraying Duke in The Miserly Knight.

In the 2020-21 season, Mr. Vincent sang the role of Captain and covered the title role of Eugene Onegin in a house debut at the Santa Fe Opera conducted by Nicholas Carter and directed by Alessandro Talevi; made his company debut as Marcello in La bohème at the National Performing Arts Center, Taiwan; and covered the title role in Rigoletto with Tulsa Opera. He was also scheduled to cover the role of Ezio in Attila at Lyric Opera of Chicago with new music director Enrique Mazzola and sing the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly with Opera Philadelphia conducted by Corrado Rovaris before the pandemic forced both to be cancelled.

Highlights of previous seasons include role debuts as Jauno in West Side Story with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin; Joseph De Rocher in the Chicago premiere of Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking; Belcore in L’elisir d’amore at Indianapolis Opera; he joined the Lyric Opera of Chicago to cover the role of  Count Tomsky in The Queen of Spades; sang the role of Behike in the North American premiere of Hatuey: A Memory of Fire in collaboration with the Peak Performance series; and made his debut as Germont in La Traviata with Martha Cardona Opera at Merkin Hall in New York. As a Resident Artist at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts, Mr. Vincent performed numerous title roles including: Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, Rubenstein’s The Demon, and Gianni Schicchi, as well as Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Albert in Werther, Guglielmo Wulf in Le Villi, Alberich in Das Rheingold, and Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte. In addition to his operatic credits, Mr. Vincent can be seen in the featured role of César in the acclaimed film Bel Canto alongside Academy Award winner Julianne Moore and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe.

Mr. Vincent has garnered numerous awards from around the globe including the Éva Marton International Singing Competition (Grand Finalist - 2021); Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Semi-Finalist - 2021, 2018); Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition (Founder’s Award - 2021); The Young Patroness of the Opera Competition (1st Prize - 2019); Nicola Martinucci International Competition (2nd Prize Winner - 2019); Vero Beach Rising Stars Competition (1st Prize & Sergio Franchi Award Winner - 2019).

Mr. Vincent hails from Kansas City, Missouri. He holds both a B.A. and M.A. in Voice Performance from Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, Mr. Vincent was awarded the coveted Bienen School of Music Eckstein Full Scholarship Fellowship and was the dean’s choice to sing for President Barack Obama.
